After significant problems with how older Australians care needs are determined, Health Department officials warned ditching the algorithm could could billions.
CANBERRA — Shadow Minister for Health and Aged Care Anne Ruston, has renewed calls to scrap the algorithm that is making calls on how much money aging Australians receive for care at home.
“This algorithm, quite frankly, can be making almost life and death decisions about the care needs and the priority of those care needs of older Australians,” she told POLITICO’s “Canberra Playbook Podcast.”Her criticism comes in wake of a Commonwealth Ombudsman report this week that raised concerns the system was not delivering “fair and consistent” outcomes.
The Interactive Assessment Tool collects information about an older person’s needs, then uses algorithms to calculate their eligibility, funding, and how quickly they should receive home care.
