The upheaval will deepen the fallout from scrutiny of Codelco’s production figures. The company disclosed last week that it was investigating evidence that copper may have been double-counted between Salvador and Ministro Hales, potentially inflating reported output. It hired Ernst & Young to investigate that case, while KPMG is conducting a broader review of 2024-2025 output.

The production-accounting problems risk eroding confidence in Codelco among customers and bondholders at a difficult time for the state-owned miner, which is grappling with operational and project setbacks and record high debt.

The probes followed a separate audit that found about 27,000 tons — about 2% of Codelco’s reported own-mine production last year — had been improperly recognized as finished even though it required further processing. That case also resulted in dismissals and the recalculation of output-linked incentives.
