NAGOYA, Japan -- Toyota Motor and Waymo will start operating autonomous robotaxis in Japan in 2027 using the bZ4X electric vehicle under plans announced Friday, with an eye toward later expanding into the U.K. and elsewhere.

Taxis capable of Level 4 autonomous driving -- requiring no driver under certain conditions -- will be produced with vehicles supplied by the Japanese automaker using driverless technologies from the Alphabet subsidiary.

"Operation will begin with a small number of vehicles, allowing us to identify and address challenges early to make progress toward safe autonomous taxi services," said Hiroki Nakajima, executive vice president at Toyota.

The bZ4X sport utility vehicles for the robotaxi will be made at Toyota's Takaoka plant in Aichi prefecture. In addition to integrating Waymo's autonomous driving system, the EVs will include taxi specifications typical for Japan, such as automated doors.

Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov avoided giving specifics on locations or fleet size, saying the companies will be able to offer more details as they progress toward commercialization.

The partnership with Toyota will be a foundation for large-scale commercial operations, according to Dolgov.
