Supporters of Irfan Al-Hussaini demonstrated in August at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in Dhaka.

PALO ALTO, Calif.—In the spring of 2024, Georgia Tech splashed the love story of two rising stars in artificial intelligence across its social media. Fabia Farlin Athena and Irfan Al-Hussaini had finished doctorates with shelves full of awards and were headed to prestigious Silicon Valley posts: she at Stanford University, he at Nvidia, one of the world’s most valuable companies.

The couple climbed the ranks fast. Athena made Forbes’s 2025 “30 Under 30” list for research into the critical question of how to make AI use less energy. Al-Hussaini rose to senior data scientist at Nvidia, earning around $500,000 a year in base pay and stock grants.

But on the morning of July 22, about an hour after Al-Hussaini finished a work presentation, his colleagues received a note saying his wife wasn’t well and he was taking the rest of the day off, according to messages reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Twenty minutes later, Athena called 911, screaming that he had hanged himself. Eight days later, he died at Stanford Medical Center at age 32.

The death has stunned Al-Hussaini’s family and friends in two countries. In his native Bangladesh, many had celebrated him as the successful product of a pressure-filled academic system that views the U.S. as the pinnacle. In Silicon Valley, he was part of an elite South Asian diaspora working thousands of miles from home in America’s most lucrative, cutting-edge field. In the months since his death, the private tragedy has erupted into a pitched public battle.

Bangladesh’s consul general in New York sent Palo Alto police a letter “expressing profound concern regarding the circumstances surrounding his death” and calling for “a comprehensive law enforcement investigation.”Al-Hussaini’s family is publicly challenging the medical examiner’s suicide ruling. They have staged protests at the California attorney general’s office in Sacramento and at Palo Alto City Hall, holding “Justice for Irfan” and “We Want Answers” signs. His death has become a social-media flashpoint in Bangladesh and sparked a demonstration at the prominent Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, where he earned his undergraduate degree.

At a livestreamed news conference outside Palo Alto City Hall last month, Tony Brass, an attorney for the family, said there are questions authorities need to answer.

“This was a man who was fully engaged in his personal and professional life,” Brass said. “Why ask for leave from work when you’re about to take your life? Why not write a suicide note?”

Palo Alto police Lt. Nicolas Martinez said detectives continue to investigate, but that “there is still no evidence that shows the death was a result of foul play.”

The death has also laid bare tensions between Al-Hussaini’s wife and her in-laws. The family has sued her over control of his body and estate. At the news conference, Brass called it a “marriage that was characterized by manipulation, characterized by isolation from his family, characterized by scars of violence.”Athena’s attorney, Matthew Davis, said she was never abusive and that she called 911 as soon as she cut him down, then spent 10 minutes following a dispatcher’s CPR instructions.

Athena and her family have faced what Davis called an “unrelenting and vicious social-media campaign.”In court filings, Athena said even her Stanford colleagues are getting emails from Al-Hussaini’s supporters making accusations against her.

Al-Hussaini grew up on the campus of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, or BUET, where his father is a well-known engineering professor. A whiz with numbers, he majored in electrical and electronic engineering at what is often called the “MIT of Bangladesh.”At Georgia Tech, he studied how AI could solve healthcare problems and he won national awards, including a 2023 honor for a novel framework that detects seizures in epileptic patients.

“In the last year in the lab, he just went on fire,” said Cassie Mitchell, his doctoral adviser there. “He did the equivalent of at least three years of stuff most people do, maybe four, in a single year.”Athena, the daughter of a prominent Bangladeshi lawyer, also attended BUET but met Al-Hussaini at Georgia Tech. They dedicated their theses to one another: He was her “unwavering pillar of strength” and Athena was the “relentless drive” that propelled him.

Behind the success, his personal life was in turmoil, his family alleged in an Oct. 2 memo to Palo Alto police, asking authorities to investigate.

Irfan Al-Hussaini and Fabia Farlin Athena seen in an undated photo from social media.

The memo says Al-Hussaini temporarily moved in with his sister, Sarah Al-Hussaini, in early 2024. He showed Sarah a photo of handwritten notes he had signed promising not to talk about violent incidents and told her his wife controlled his social-media accounts and communications, the memo alleges.

Davis, Athena’s attorney, denied the abuse allegations and questioned the authenticity of the notes. He said Athena never had her husband sign anything and that she said the signatures didn’t match his handwriting. “They had a loving marriage,” he said.

By year’s end, the memo says, Al-Hussaini told his family, without explanation, that he was cutting off contact. When his father, in California for a conference, visited the couple’s Palo Alto apartment with Sarah, Al-Hussaini wouldn’t come out.

In an email to his sister, he wrote: “I can’t.”In her first public account of the morning of July 22, Athena said through her lawyer that they were both working from home. She went to shower and pray and emerged about 15 minutes later to a quiet apartment, she said.

“I felt something was wrong,” she added. “Then I found him hanging in the kitchen. I screamed and ran toward him.”His family and friends descended on the Stanford hospital where he lay unconscious, and his mother grasped his hand. “I’ve been praying that I can hold my son’s hand again. I just didn’t realize it would be like this,” she said.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s autopsy report, obtained by the Journal, said there was “no reported evidence of physical struggle or foul play in the apartment.”But the examiner’s review of his 2024 therapy records found instances of “self-reported domestic violence,” according to the report.

Davis said she has no idea what the “vague reference to a 2024 incident in the autopsy report is about.”To this day, Athena said through Davis, the only thing that gives her comfort is talking to her late husband: “I tell him, ‘I love you and will always.’ ” Mourners have held vigils for Al-Hussaini at Stanford, the University of Southern California, Georgia Tech and University of Texas at Austin. In August, students and teachers formed a human chain at his Bangladesh alma mater. In early September, the family delivered a petition to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and 10 days later, rallied outside Palo Alto City Hall.

Protesters in Bangladesh have demanded a forensic autopsy and investigation into the death of Irfan Al-Hussaini.

A Justice for Irfan Al-Hussaini Facebook page has more than 8,000 followers, and a Change.org petition demanding an investigation has topped 15,000 signatures. At news conferences, the family has questioned the timeline of that morning and whether he sent the message to his colleagues.

They say police haven’t explained how Al-Hussaini could have messaged colleagues 20 minutes before the 911 call, when they say doctors told them his brain damage indicated his oxygen had been cut off for 30 to 60 minutes. They fought his wife in court for an independent autopsy, but lost.

“He believed life was the most precious thing from God,” his sister said. “The brother I knew would never ever take his own life.”Athena’s lawyer, Davis, said he has reviewed medical records and there is no mention of Al-Hussaini being deprived of oxygen for 30 to 60 minutes.

“They’re grasping at straws because they don’t want to accept the fact that their son took his own life,” he said.

One friend Al-Hussaini kept in touch with was Md Obaidul Hossen, a Meta software engineer who had taken the same route from Bangladesh to Silicon Valley and had marveled at how quickly his friend rose at Nvidia.

“We still think it’s all a nightmare. We will probably, you know, wake up and he will come back,” Hossen said. “We feel like we are also failures because we could have probably done something which would avoid this kind of scenario, but we don’t know what.”Help is available: Reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) by dialing or texting 988.
