TOKYO -- A New Zealand investor information services provider has developed a dubbing service using artificial intelligence that instantly translates videos of company executives into multiple languages.

The service by Arbitr Group, formerly named Straker, is expected to help Japanese companies seeking to bolster communication with overseas investors as the Tokyo Stock Exchange has required since 2025 that companies listed on its Prime market provide disclosures in English.

"Traditional dubbing has not always fully captured a speaker's passion and subtle nuances," said Arbitr co-CEO David Sowerby, who is also representative director at Japanese subsidiary Straker Japan. "By enabling speakers to communicate in other languages using their own voices, we can make their messages more compelling and impactful for audiences." Overseas investors want to see a company's "context," such as past disclosures and strategies, in addition to earnings, Sowerby said. Incorporating such company background into AI improves the accuracy of translation and document creation. This helps companies "communicate not just the numbers, but the story behind them," he added.

Communications from top management provide crucial information. Investors pay close attention to the language used by executives, especially in areas that are hard to quantify, such as talent development.

The most common practice among companies with high return on equity was external disclosures on talent strategies, according to a Nikkei Research analysis of human resource policies at 250 companies in Japan and elsewhere.

Arbitr says its AI dubbing can keep costs down to 900 yen ($6) per minute, compared with conventional human dubbing that can cost $80 to $100 per minute. The company also receives inquiries from Japanese businesses about using the technology for product manuals and training and marketing videos for their facilities abroad.

Interest in Japanese companies is growing among overseas investors. In fiscal 2025, foreign ownership of Japanese shares reached 34.7%, according to shareholder distribution data from the TSE and other exchanges, setting a record high for the third year running.

Challenges remain when it comes to disclosures in English. Survey results released by the TSE in September 2025 included comments from dissatisfied overseas investors saying that English disclosures are often delayed by three to five business days and they are often not as comprehensive as Japanese versions.
