Human Rights Watch says Mountaga Tall, a prominent critic of Mali's military government, has been missing for six months along with his son after security forces allegedly took them into custody. The rights group is calling on authorities to disclose their whereabouts and release them immediately.

Mali has been ruled by a military junta since a 2020 coup, and the government has repeatedly postponed promised elections while moving to restrict or dissolve some political parties. Rights groups and several Western governments say the crackdown on dissenting voices has widened in recent years.

Tall is known as one of the country's longstanding political figures. Human Rights Watch said similar forced-disappearance cases are not rare in Mali and that families are often left without answers from the authorities, and it is urging the international community to raise pressure over the case.
