Chinese green energy company Envision Group said it’s deploying new technology to help power data centers with renewables.
The integrated 800-volt direct current system is being used to power artificial intelligence computing at Envision’s Galaxy Campus in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, according to a statement on Monday.
Envision said it’s the world’s first commercial adoption of the system, and comes as China bids to translate its dominance of renewable energy into cheap and abundant electricity for AI.
“AI data centers need power systems that coordinate renewable energy, energy storage, and the grid to meet computing demand,” said senior vice president, Kevin Huang.
The platform, which combines solid-state transformers, battery energy storage and a split-second controller, simplifies how AI data centers are run, the company said. The system is more compact, reducing the need for copper and cables, delivering lower infrastructure costs and more efficient computing power.
The Galaxy Campus is expected to be finished by the end of 2028. Its planned capacity of 3 gigawatts is designed to support up to 1 million AI accelerators operating in parallel, with more than 80% of its power coming directly from clean energy, the company said.
Envision’s broader Mission Gobi initiative seeks to deliver 5 GW of AI data center capacity in desert regions around the world by 2030.
