Bank of America Corp. and a sustainable markets venture backed by Britain’s King Charles III are launching an investment strategy designed to steer capital into restoring the natural environment.

The nature initiative, which BofA is creating together with the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), will be managed by French investment firm Eurazeo SE as a subset of a larger fund, according to a statement on Monday.

The goal is to channel private capital into supporting biodiversity via Eurazeo’s Future Industries Fund III, according to the statement. The strategy has $40 million in initial capital from BofA and Eurazeo, and has been structured so that other members of SMI, which was founded by King Charles in 2020, can also contribute money.

Brian Moynihan, the chief executive of Bank of America and chair of the SMI, said in a statement that investors “are seeking opportunities to invest in nature and biodiversity” and that the agreement with Eurazeo, dubbed the Lighthouse Initiative, “can help create even more opportunity.”Investor allocations to restoring biodiversity and protecting the natural world have so far remained modest, despite high-level efforts to draw attention to the matter. A commitment made by almost 200 countries in 2022 to reverse a steep decline in nature by the end of the decade and mobilize at least $200 billion annually for that purpose has so far resulted in only a small fraction of that amount in private investment.

“We wanted to show people that you can earn a commercial private capital return and also deliver measurable benefits for nature and biodiversity,” Paul Donofrio, vice chair of Bank of America, said in an interview. With an aim “to generate a real commercial return alongside meaningful outcomes,” SMI and BofA looked “long and hard for the right manager” before settling on Eurazeo, Donofrio added.

Eurazeo will make investments in companies that support ecosystem protection and nature regeneration, as well as in nature-positive supply chains and businesses that facilitate finance flows to nature. Prospective examples include supply-chain traceability and eDNA-based biodiversity monitoring companies, as well as regenerative agriculture and sustainable forestry.

The strategy is intended to align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework of 2022. Each investment is expected to contribute to at least one of the targets agreed back then, including a goal of protecting and restoring at least 30% of the Earth’s land and water by 2030.
