SE agreed to partner with Chinese contract drug developer WuXi Biologics on biosimilar candidates that could reach the market in the next decade, potentially more than doubling its current portfolio.

The German hospital and drugs company agreed on what it called a “pay as you go” structure for the deal on as many as 37 molecules, the company said Monday, adding to the 29 that Fresenius currently has. Unlike generics, which are exact copies of the drug they are based on, biosimilars are imitations of a biological medicine that are often complex and expensive to produce.

The deal comes as a wave of drug patents expire in the coming years, creating opportunities for biosimilar makers such as Swiss firm Sandoz Group AG. Under Chief Executive Officer Michael Sen, Fresenius sees biosimilars as a key growth driver at its Kabi unit, which also includes medical nutrition and devices.

They were down about 2.4% through Friday’s close.
