Switzerland is pursuing a strategy of trade diversification to reduce economic dependencies and safeguard its prosperity amid growing global uncertainty and trade tensions, President Guy Parmelin said Monday.
"Trade relationships are being challenged. Economic dependencies are increasingly being used as a tool of power," Parmelin told foreign journalists at a press briefing in Bern.
Warning that the international economic order is "under pressure," he stressed that Switzerland’s reliance on foreign markets makes isolationism untenable.
"Our prosperity depends largely on international trade," he said. "Therefore, isolationism is not an option for Switzerland. Nor is inaction. Diversification is our answer." Parmelin highlighted recent diplomatic and trade initiatives involving India, Thailand, Vietnam, and China, including an enhanced free trade agreement signed with Beijing last Friday.
He also pointed to Switzerland’s agreement with the countries of the South American trade bloc Mercosur, covering a market of around 270 million people. However, he emphasized that expanding into new markets would not come at the expense of traditional partners.
Bern is opening new doors, while maintaining relationships with its main traditional markets in Europe and the US remains a "priority," according to the president.
"We do not want to reduce our trade with Europe or the United States. We want to increase our trade with the entire world," he said.
Parmelin added that trade tensions with Washington had demonstrated the need to defend Swiss interests while maintaining dialogue. "Those who have several strong partners are less vulnerable," he explained.
Underlining that "cooperation is better than confrontation" and "common rules are better than the law of the jungle," the president said this is why Bern remains committed to "open, fair, and rules-based" global trade.
