The Royal Navy has intercepted a Russian spy ship off the coast of Scotland. Helicopters were dispatched to track the intelligence-gathering ship, which was “closely monitoring” a Nato exercise, near the Outer Hebrides.

The Royal Navy said on Monday that its Merlin helicopter force had tracked Viktor Leonov, the Vishnya-class intelligence-gathering ship, as it sailed near the Outer Hebrides from Sept 29 to Oct 8.

The Merlin Helicopter Force stands ready to answer the call at a moment’s notice.”Earlier this year, the Merlins were kitted out with state-of-the-art sonobuoys as part of a £40m upgrade to improve their tracking of Vladimir Putin’s submarines. Russia intensifies activity HMS Dauntless, a Type 45 destroyer, and HMS Tyne, a patrol ship, were sent to track a Russian frigate escorting sanctioned cargo ships through the Channel last month.
