TOKYO -- As artificial intelligence grows more capable of taking on the work of video game development, that will "create opportunities for everyone to think seriously about what creation really means," Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind the Mario and Legend of Zelda franchises, told reporters.
Miyamoto, an executive fellow at Nintendo, will on Tuesday become the first figure in the video game industry to receive Japan's prestigious Order of Culture. Shortly after the decision was announced in late October, he spoke to reporters about topics including generative AI and his advice to new game developers. Edited excerpts from the news conference follow. Q: What is your view of the relationship between games and society?
When I was a child, on New Year's, you'd bring out [Nintendo board games] and play them. They'd get stored in the closet for a year, then come out again on New Year's. Once they got into making video games, people would have a console in the middle of the living room, as part of their everyday lives. I think that's very fitting for Nintendo.
I've made things that would interest not just people who played games, but also people who didn't. Back then [in his 20s], I was a player myself, but before I knew it, parents and grandparents, too, became part of the generations that played games. The fact that three generations know about games is incredibly significant. I want to go on making things that will be in the middle of people's living rooms. Miyamoto spoke to reporters after the announcement of his selection to receive Japan's Order of Culture. Q: What do you want to do as an Order of Culture recipient?
I just want to keep working steadily on the things I can do. I think that games are the form of media that engages most sincerely with users. The interesting thing is not what we give people, but what emerges when they use [games] interactively. The strength of the Japanese games industry lies in how thoroughly we have considered how to engage with people.
When you do the same thing as other people, you just compete with them, so I've made a point of doing different things from others. If there's even one person who emerges who works seriously to make [games] based on their own unique perspective while empathizing with users, I'll be happy. I want to work to that end.
Q: Generative artificial intelligence has lowered the hurdles to making games. What are your thoughts on AI and games as culture?
In our day [when Miyamoto majored in industrial design at university], we learned lettering -- how to write characters neatly. But as computers evolved, people's sense for layouts and individual design capabilities came to the forefront for the first time.
As AI becomes able to do more work, that will create opportunities for everyone to think seriously about what creation really means. Copy-pasted designs have existed before, but they don't last. When an individual designs something, they create with intention. All a computer does is help with that work. I think that no matter how much it evolves, there will still be things we can do.
"Donkey Kong," "Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda" are among the hit games that Miyamoto was involved in creating. Q: It's been 50 years since you joined Nintendo. What does receiving the Order of Culture mean to you?
At my age, you don't know when you'll stop being able to do things, so I want to keep enjoying what I'm doing now. Just like a game's players, its maker also plays as they create. I think it would be fun to continue doing that. Q: What brings you joy in game development?
The most enjoyable thing is seeing people play what I've made. I don't think much about what kind of message I want to convey or how to convey it. I think I'd enjoy just continuing to do that. Q: What do you want to say to young game developers?
It's best not to start out by being a big fan of a certain game and thinking about how "it would be more fun if they did this." Rather than improving on an existing base, working hard to create -- while thinking that "doing this would be interesting" -- is fun, and it gives your work meaning.
