“At the highest level, the gas theme in the Permian Basin has moved from supply-push to demand-pull,” he wrote. “As we have said many times, the Permian Basin has not tried to produce gas yet.”It’s the strongest statement of growth for the heating and power plant fuel ever made by Diamondback. The company is seen as a proxy for the US shale industry because of its vast footprint in the Permian Basin, which has been the engine of US oil expansion.

The view from Diamondback would mean the Permian overtaking the Marcellus Shale as the longtime shale-gas king, echoing a forecast made by Citigroup Inc. analysts in August. The Marcellus, stretching across Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio, has been the largest gas-producing basin since 2012, according to data from the US Energy Information Administration.

Booming gas supply out of the Permian has helped developers secure financing for a wave of new giant pipelines shipping West Texas gas to demand centers emerging across the state. These include growing population areas in East Texas, data center hubs near the Panhandle and new liquefied natural gas export terminals on the Gulf Coast.

As the Permian ages, the production ratio of gas to oil will continue to climb, Van’t Hof wrote. He added that when its gas resources are considered along with its surface land and produced water, the company has crucial ingredients needed for data centers, too.
