Armed bandits killed five Nigerian police officers after ambushing a vehicle transporting them from Sokoto state to neighbouring Zamfara state in the country's northwest.

The officers were travelling along the Sokoto-Gusau highway in a Zamfara state mass transit bus when gunmen intercepted the vehicle and opened fire on them on Monday evening. Abdullahi Faruk, a police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said the bodies of the five officers had been deposited at the morgue of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.
