An initial public offering of Baidu Inc.’s artificial intelligence chip unit may slip to next year, people with knowledge of the matter said, as the company waits for approval from the Chinese securities regulator.

Kunlunxin, which makes chips that power servers in data centers, filed confidentially for a $2 billion IPO in Hong Kong in January and was expected to get approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission to launch the deal in the summer, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing confidential information.

While the company is still preparing for the offering, it is now seen as more likely to take place in 2027, subject to receiving the green light from the regulator, according to the people.

A representative for Baidu said the companyrejects what it called “market rumors.”“As Kunlunxin is undergoing its confidential filing process, and per regulatory requirements, we can’t disclose any material non-public information, which would include the progress of the listing process,” the spokesperson said, adding that the company will make a public announcement in due course. The CSRC didn’t immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

Kunlunxin was one of the more high-profile IPOs expected in Hong Kong this year, where proceeds have hit $51.6 billion, edging closer to the record set in 2010. The bulk of activity has been driven by companies in the AI supply chain, a sector at the forefront of China’s technological ambitions.

IPOs in the financial hub have slowed since September as cracks appeared in the AI trade globally, with investors increasingly demanding clear returns on hundreds of billions of dollars in spending.

Kunlunxin also began work for an IPO on Shanghai’s tech-heavy STAR Board earlier this year, although the Hong Kong IPO was expected to come first.

Other Chinese chipmakers have gone public on mainland bourses as the country tries to lower its dependence on US tech and become a global leader in AI. Memory chipmaker CXMT Corp. raised 66.6 billion yuan ($10 billion) in July in the country’s second-largest IPO ever and quickly became one of China’s most valuable firms.

Kunlunxin, created in part to feed Baidu’s appetite for computing power to run its online businesses, is now one of a few Chinese companies capable of designing the powerful accelerators essential for AI operations. Along with firms like Huawei Technologies Co. and Cambricon Technologies Corp., Kunlunxin is likely to be central to Beijing’s efforts to develop a homegrown chip industry capable of rivaling the US.
