Germany must lead efforts to restore Europe’s economic competitiveness, the head of Swiss industrial group ABB said on Tuesday, warning that a failure to implement fundamental reforms could put the continent at risk of mass unemployment.

In an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Chief Executive Morten Wierod questioned Germany’s ability to translate political pledges into swift action.

While politicians recognize the economic problems and demonstrate a willingness to change, “the challenge lies in implementation,” he said.

“I rather doubt their ability to actually implement the necessary measures quickly.”Wierod said Germany, as the EU’s largest economy, bears particular responsibility for the continent’s economic performance.

“Germany is the engine of Europe,” he said, arguing that the country must lead the way and pull others along.

Asked whether Europe could face mass unemployment without fundamental reforms, Wierod said: “The danger exists.”He warned that the effects of declining competitiveness often become visible only years after companies make investment decisions.

“If investments are made elsewhere and factories are no longer built here, the consequences are often only noticed years later. By then, the decision has long since been made,” he said.

Europe must strengthen demand growth and address high energy and raw material costs, Wierod said, noting that domestic demand in the US and Asia has grown more dynamically for years.

“So we don’t lack talent. However, for many years Europe has concentrated more on regulation than on innovation,” he said. He also criticized Germany’s energy policy. “The premature shutdown of nuclear power plants was a mistake,” he said.
