Brandenburg Premier Dietmar Woidke said Tuesday that Germany’s planned expansion of gas-fired power plants will drive up electricity bills and deepen concerns about industrial competitiveness.
“This is rather bad news for the electricity price, because the price of electricity will rise due to the construction of the gas-fired power plants,” Woidke told Politico’s Competitive Germany Summit in Berlin, according to the Welt newspaper.
Operators will receive compensation for keeping capacity available, even if plants run for a few hours annually. Payments will be financed through a levy on electricity customers beginning in 2031.
Woidke said temporary electricity subsidies offered insufficient certainty for investment in energy-intensive industries.
Germany’s Federal Network Agency awarded 11 contracts in its first tender for long-term electricity capacity, including six to Leag.
Economy Minister Katherina Reiche welcomed the results, saying 41 bids totaling almost 12 gigawatts demonstrated strong investor interest.
“We are moving the power plant strategy from the planning stage to implementation, thereby creating the basis for a secure and affordable electricity supply,” she said.
The plants will provide backup when wind and solar generation is insufficient, supporting Germany’s planned coal phaseout by 2038.
