Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., said during an interview Sunday that only a "spiritually sick" country would elect President Donald Trump twice, calling the president a symptom of a larger problem.

Politico's Jonathan Martin asked Warnock if America needed a "spiritual rebirth" and Warnock said, "Absolutely."

Warnock called the 2026 midterm elections an "inflection point," warning that if Democrats do not win, the 2028 election could be "theoretical."

He declined to say whether he planned to run for president but called for a "robust debate" and a "real primary in 2028." The White House did not immediately return a request for comment.

During an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper in April, Warnock, who serves as the senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, was asked several questions about pastors who support Trump and argue he was put in office with a divine purpose. Warnock called the Trump administration "ungodly" and likened those leaders to Christians who used the Bible to defend slavery.
