In a Senate campaign announcement video, Moore touted being the first elected official in the country to endorse Trump for president in 2015, saying he "didn’t wait to see which way the wind was blowing." Moore, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, served three terms in the House and was previously in the U.S. Army National Guard. He became the Republican nominee after defeating U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson in a June runoff. Moore had been all but certain to defeat Democrat Everett Weiss, an attorney who won a runoff himself. The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rated the Alabama Senate seat as "solid Republican."
