China claims it is a wine bottle, but no one in Papua New Guinea dares to open it. A strange object resembling an explosive has caused a diplomatic row between the two nations.
On Friday, a 32kg green cylinder was found in a commercial shipping container in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Police arrested four Chinese nationals at a construction site after the object was found.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, a police report that was finalised on Tuesday confirmed that the item was an undetonated 130mm Type 59 Artillery Projectile containing chemical explosives and a fuse. However, Beijing has denied these allegations.
The Chinese embassy issued a statement on Tuesday claiming that while it was awaiting official findings, the object was a “shell-shaped wine bottle”, which poses “no danger at all”.
The embassy also said that because of China’s strict gun control laws, “it is virtually impossible for an illegal military-grade artillery shell to be smuggled out of China to PNG”. ‘What sort of wine bottle weighs 32kg?’
Post-Courier, a media outlet in PNG, first reported the item on Friday after it had been found in the container at a construction site among building materials.
Police and the PNG military then launched a joint investigation, dismissing claims that the item could be a dummy, according to David Manning, the police commissioner.
He said: “Police acted quickly upon receiving information that the artillery round had been discovered. The area was secured to prevent the risk of harm in the surrounding area.”“This enabled police and military explosive disposal experts to move in, examine the device and have it safely moved to be stored in a secure facility,” he added.
PNG police have not yet responded to the claims made by the Chinese embassy. However, social media users expressed scepticism in the comments.
One user asked: “What sort of wine bottle weighs 32kg?”In recent years, Pacific Island nations such as Papua New Guinea have been caught in the middle of power plays between China and the West, as the two sides compete for access to the Second Island Chain, a string of islands with naval bases in the West Pacific to restrict China’s sea access.
