Pope Leo XIV on Friday arrives in France for a four-day visit – his fifth Apostolic journey since becoming pontiff last year – during which he hopes to repair the Catholic Church’s standing after sexual abuse scandals while also addressing issues such as the need to regulate AI and laying out his vision for Europe’s future. Security: In Paris alone, some 14,000 police officers, gendarmes, and military personnel and 2,500 firefighters will be on duty while the pope moves around the city on Friday. That number will only be slightly lower during his Mass at the central Place de la Concorde on Saturday. More than 20 métro and commuter train stations have been temporarily closed for the visit, as well as many streets in the centre of the capital. The programme: Friday, September 25: Pope Leo XIV arrives in Paris at 10am CET where a welcome ceremony will be held for him before he heads to the Élysée Palace to meet President Emmanuel Macron.

The Church’s reputation has since been hit by further scandals, including a raft of accusations against charity icon Abbé Pierre and widespread physical and sexual abuse at the Notre-Dame de Bétharram boarding school in southwestern France. Monday, September 28: On his final day in France, he will travel to Metz to attend an “To the Roots of Europe for Peace and Unity” meeting at the “Robert Schuman” Conference Centre. He will end his visit with a Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Stephen. He flies out of France on Monday night at 7pm.
