YOKOHAMA, Japan --Nissan Motor aims to manufacture 80% of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. locally by the end of 2030 from the current 65%, an executive said on Monday.

"In April of last year, we had significant headwinds from the tariffs [imposed by President Donald Trump's administration] ... we pivoted toward building more U.S. cars and localizing all the cars and the parts," Christian Meunier, chairperson of the Management Committee for Nissan Americas, said at a media roundtable.

Before Trump imposed tariffs on imported cars, 40% of Nissan vehicles sold in the U.S. were manufactured locally. The company has since raised the figure to 65% in order to reduce its tariff burden. Nissan has six manufacturing operations, for both vehicles and engines, in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil Meunier added, "The goal is to continue to increase this towards 80% in the future." The company is focusing on three core models made in the U.S., such as the Rogue SUV, Pathfinder SUV and Frontier pickup truck, which together account for 55% of its U.S. sales.

Nissan's move is in step with other Japanese automakers that are strengthening local productions in the U.S. Honda Motor has entered the final stage of discussions to build a hybrid vehicle plant in the country, Nikkei reported last week. Toyota Motor, meanwhile, plans to invest $1 billion to build electric and hybrid vehicles for the North American market.

Nissan, which is attempting a turnaround under its Re:Nissan restructuring plan, has faced business difficulties, with weak profitability in its U.S. operations one of the contributing factors.

Meunier, who took his current role in January 2025, recalled being shocked to find that Nissan's U.S. retail market share of 6% to 7%, which it had maintained for many years, has fallen to roughly half that level.

"I would say the company had lost its fighting spirit, at least in the American region, especially in the U.S. I think there was not the same appetite for selling cars," he said.

He explained that Nissan is now putting all its resources behind its three core models and has seen its U.S. market share grow by maintaining discipline in how it take vehicles to market, manufacturing and cash management.

Meunier also said the company had stopped production of its first plug-in hybrid vehicle, Rogue PHEV, which was launched earlier this year, for the North American market.

"Plug-in hybrid in the U.S. has almost disappeared because the incentives are gone from the government," he said.

Meanwhile, Nissan plans to begin selling a Rogue equipped with its proprietary e-Power hybrid technology in the U.S. in November. The model will initially be imported from Japan, while local production in the U.S. will come potentially in 2028, Meunier said.

Regarding Nissan's partnership with Honda announced last month, Meunier said, "There are already some partnerships that exist with Honda on certain technologies," adding that the company is exploring different opportunities to achieve more scale, including potential partnerships with other companies.
