KYOTO, Japan/TOKYO -- Mitsuya Kishida, the 66-year-old president of Japanese motor maker Nidec, has decided to step down as CEO, Nikkei learned on Monday.
The company is expected to book several hundred billion yen (100 billion yen equals $636 million) in impairment losses significantly more than in earlier estimates -- related to its electric vehicles business and accounting irregularities The board, which consists largely of outside directors, intends to replace Kishida in an effort to clarify managerial responsibility for the issues.
Chief Technology Officer Michio Kaida, 70, has emerged as a potential successor to Kishida, but the company is also weighing an appointment from among the current directors.
Kishida is expected to submit his resignation as early as Tuesday. On Wednesday, Nidec plans to release its securities report for the fiscal year ended March and announce corrections to its financial results for the past five years. The company is making final adjustments with its auditor and others regarding the details and scale of the impairment losses.
Nidec will record cumulative impairment losses of several hundred billion yen on fixed assets and goodwill related to its e-axle EV drive unit business and other operations. Including revisions stemming from accounting irregularities, impairment charges could reach around 1 trillion yen.
Kishida joined Nidec in 2022 from Sony, now Sony Group. After serving in various senior positions, he became representative director, president and CEO in 2024. He oversaw automotive operations, including the e-axle business. Although he had been working to turn the business around, outside directors have reportedly pressed him to resign as the scale of the losses increased.
The e-axle business was a pet project of founder Shigenobu Nagamori. Nidec invested heavily in the operation, including through mergers and acquisitions. But the global shift to EVs has slowed, while Chinese EV makers have moved to vertically integrate key components, including e-axles.
Nagamori's prediction that the EV industry would move toward horizontal specialization proved off the mark, and profitability slumped sharply. The struggling business also became filled with accounting irregularities, including efforts to avoid impairment losses on fixed assets.
As of March, Nidec said it was considering impairment charges of around 250 billion yen on fixed assets and goodwill related to the e-axle business. After scrutinizing the likelihood of recovering its investments, the company decided to increase the losses substantially from its initial estimate.
Accounting irregularities at Nidec came to light in September last year. The Tokyo Stock Exchange designated the company as a security on special alert that October. Nagamori stepped down as representative director at the end of 2025 and resigned as honorary chairman in February this year.
With Kishida's expected departure, the resignations of two consecutive representative directors could affect efforts to rebuild Nidec's internal controls and have the designation lifted.
Nidec had shareholder equity of more than 1.7 trillion yen as of the end of September 2025. Even if impairment losses reached 1 trillion yen and the company posted a substantial net loss, it would not become insolvent. In November last year, Nidec signed commitment-line agreements with MUFG Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. providing up to 600 billion yen in total financing.
Kaida led the preparations for the improvement plan and progress report submitted to the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
