The country’s “inflation challenge” is being “made much, much worse by decisions taken on the other side of the world”, Treasurer Jim Chalmers says as Australians brace for another rate hike.

The RBA is tipped to raise the official cash rate 0.25 per cent to 4.6 per cent on Tuesday – the highest level in 15 years.

Pushing back against claims that public spending at federal and state and territory levels was driving up inflation, Mr Chalmers said there were “a whole range of factors playing out in our economy”, including US President Donald Trump’s deadly tiff with Iran. “We do have an inflation challenge,” Mr Chalmers told News24. “It is made much worse by the war in the Middle East – that’s not an opinion, that’s a fact.”

Ahead of fresh inflation data due out on Wednesday, he said the biggest inflationary pressure was the US-Iran conflict, which has spiked oil global prices and slapped further strain on supply chains.
