By Todd Gillespie Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s board has discussed a plan for Chief Operating Officer John Waldron to succeed David Solomon as CEO as early as next year, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The change could occur toward the end of 2027 or in 2028, the newspaper reported Monday, citing people familiar with the matter that it didn’t identify.

Under the plan, Solomon, 64, would likely become executive chairman for about one or two years after he steps down as chief executive officer, the Journal said. Goldman’s board could approve the plan in coming months, according to the report.

Waldron, 57, who is also Goldman’s president, has long been Solomon’s heir apparent and members of the board don’t want to risk delaying a transition, the Journal said. Representatives of Goldman Sachs didn’t immediately respond to calls seeking comment.
