Plus, RFK Jr.’s plan to get Americans to eat healthily hits White House resistance, and Iran is losing its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz J. Scott Applewhite Good morning.
This is the second in a two-part series where we explore what could happen if either party overperforms in the midterms. On Monday, we looked at potential developments if Republicans run the table
Today, let’s talk about what to expect if Democrats win: Investigations (congressional ones) will happen on a scale that Washington hasn’t seen in a long time. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has said that there would be an immediate focus on “corruption.”
Rep. Jim Himes (D., Conn.) could chair the intelligence committee and has said that he might look into “nakedly corrupt dealings” between the Trump administration and companies. This could all be a double-edged sword for Democrats, though. Will voters want them to spend the run-up to the 2028 presidential election going after President Trump, or coming up with a plan for the future? 2028 talk will begin immediately.
There will be no shortage of Democratic candidates (several governors, a number of lawmakers and maybe even some outsiders). Democrats have navigated this midterm without really reconciling the differences between their Democratic Socialists of America flank and the center of the party. That debate will rage heading into 2028.
Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania will have an enormous amount of power if Democrats somehow take control of the Senate. Some in the party have turned on him and many Republicans have warmed to him. If he flirts with switching parties he could bring Washington grinding to a halt. That’s a lot of leverage for someone whose seat is up in 2028. Trump would face serious curbs on his power, and his domestic and foreign policies would be challenged in ways they weren’t in the first two years of his presidency.
He has already been impeached twice and Democrats would be under a lot of pressure from their more liberal supporters to consider impeaching him again. Trump would also—during the final two years of his presidency—be the oldest U.S. president. How would he govern differently?
Corporate America could find itself caught in the middle of the next two years. Trade policy, gas prices and high interest rates could all create uncertainty. Meanwhile, the open primaries in both parties could give rise to a lot of risks, as Democrats and Republicans decide how much populism they want to lean into during a post-Trump era.
