The US state of Tennessee is scheduled Wednesday to execute a woman convicted of murder three decades ago, marking its first execution of a female inmate in more than 200 years.

"After deliberate consideration of Christa Gail Pike’s request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene," Gov. Bill Lee said in a statement released Monday.

Pike, 50, faces lethal injection at 10 am local time (1500GMT) at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. She was convicted and sentenced to capital punishment in 1996 for the 1995 slaying of Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, remaining the only female prisoner on the state's death row.

Her defense attorneys lamented the decision, saying in a statement that proceeding puts Tennessee "on singular footing" as the first state execution of a female prisoner in more than two centuries, while an application remains pending before the US Supreme Court. A pending Supreme Court petition does not automatically stop an execution.
