Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday that cutting political and diplomatic channels with Egypt could make it more difficult to establish the truth and achieve justice in the killing of Italian researcher Giulio Regeni, broadcaster Sky Tg24 reported.
Speaking to reporters in Prague following talks with Prime Minister Andrej Babis, Meloni reiterated her closeness to Regeni's family, following a Rome court's verdict against Egyptian intelligence agents in the researcher's kidnapping.
Meloni noted that the verdict is not final and said the legal process must proceed "in the manner and time necessary." "I can say that in this search for truth and justice, we have always used all channels. We have also used political and diplomatic channels with Cairo. I have some doubts that by closing those channels, we will get closer to our goals rather than further away from them," she said.
A court in Rome sentenced three Egyptian intelligence agents to 10 years in prison Monday for the 2016 kidnapping of Regeni, while dropping a murder charge against them.
Regeni, a 28-year-old postgraduate student at the University of Cambridge in the UK, disappeared in Cairo on Jan. 25, 2016, while conducting research on trade unions and working conditions in Egypt.
His body was found days later along a highway on the outskirts of Cairo. It showed signs of severe violence and torture, including cigarette burns, broken teeth and fractured bones.
Meloni's visit focused on strengthening cooperation, including through the Italy-Czech Republic Action Plan 2026-2030, which covers political and economic relations, defense and security, infrastructure, research and innovation, migration and competitiveness.
The two leaders also discussed energy costs and cooperation on nuclear power, as well as proposals on the European Union's Emissions Trading System.
Meloni said the two countries see an opportunity to become "technological and industrial partners" in the nuclear sector, particularly in the development of small modular reactors.
