The music artist behind a song included in a government-funded commercial highlighting President Trump’s political agenda is sending a cease-and-desist letter to the White House.

“Love Me,” a song by JMSN, is featured prominently in the that recently aired on TV and was posted on the White House’s YouTube page in early September. In the 30-second commercial — one of several ads to air in recent weeks featuring a “paid for by the U.S. government disclaimer” — rapid-fire images of Trump are shown as the 2023 tune plays in the background.

The use of the song “as part of an overtly partisan, political ,” lawyer Norm Eisen and the law firm Ballard Spahr, who are representing the 39-year-old singer, said, “is particularly damaging, as it could cause others to call into question JMSN’s artistic independence and integrity.”The “unauthorized use” of the music, the letter continues, “does further harm because it associates JMSN and the song with apparent violations of federal laws prohibiting the use of taxpayer dollars for political purposes.”The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the cease-and-desist letter.

The White House has defended the commercials as “very clearly not campaign ads,” instead calling them “a reminder for Americans to love their country and know why it’s worth defending.”Several entertainers have objected to Trump’s use of their songs at his campaign rallies and in videos posted on social media over the years.
