Two Australians aboard a flight allegedly hijacked in the Middle East are safe, Foreign Minister Penny Wong has confirmed.

FlyDubai flight FZ1073 was en route from the United Arab Emirates to Israel on Wednesday when one pilot stabbed the other and “apparently tried to crash the plane”, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

He said the flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a passenger and crew member broke into the cabin and overpowered the pilot.

“Relieved to confirm at least two Australians who were on the FlyDubai flight to Israel are safe – thanks to the heroes who thwarted the attack and helped bring the passengers to safety,” Senator Wong posted on social media on Thursday.

“We’re thinking of those injured and hope for their full recovery.”It came after The Australian reported two Australians were caught up in the incident, identifying them as Steven and Carol Moss.

Mr Moss is the son of late prominent businessman Sam Moss — a Holocaust survivor who co-founded fashion the Katies fashion chain. Saudi authorities arrested the suspected hijacker when the plane landed.

FlyDubai urged “all parties to refrain from premature speculation while authorities gather the facts”.

“At this early stage, the underlying reasons and motives behind this event are unknown and remain subject to a formal investigation,” the airline said.

Israeli officials earlier confirmed all 174 passengers, most of whom were Israeli, had made it to Tel Aviv safely on a replacement flight.
