Canada Designates Proposed Pacific Link Oil Pipeline a National Interest Project On October 1, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced the fast-tracking of Pacific Link, a proposed 1-million-barrel-a-day crude oil pipeline to British Columbia's Pacific Coast.

Estimated to cost between $25 billion and $31 billion, the 1,250-kilometer pipeline aims to reduce Canada's reliance on the United States—which currently receives roughly 90% of Canadian crude exports—by expanding direct access to Asian markets.

The federal designation seeks to accelerate approvals ahead of an October 19 Alberta vote on holding an independence referendum.

However, the project still faces significant hurdles, including uncommitted commercial financing, expected legal challenges from Indigenous groups, and a requirement to complete the Pathways carbon-capture initiative before construction begins.
