TOKYO -- The number of system vulnerabilities discovered at major Japanese banks has soared, Nikkei has learned, as new artificial intelligence tools create both cybersecurity advantages and risks.

The vulnerabilities found at several major banks as of August were double the year-earlier level, sources said, and the number continues rising.

The finding is the first peek into how Japanese banks are responding to changes in the cybersecurity landscape since Anthropic announced its cutting-edge Claude Mythos AI model in April.

Advanced AI can detect more vulnerabilities much faster, thrusting organizations into a race against time to prevent exploitation of these weaknesses.

"Threat actors need to exploit only one key vulnerability, whereas payment system operators and service providers need to defend a large attack surface," Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller warned in a Sept. 29 speech.

"That asymmetry is precisely why the industry must move deliberately to leverage AI in strengthening the safety of our trusted payment systems," Waller added. Major Japanese banks gained access to Mythos this summer.

Uncertainty had arisen after the U.S. government told Anthropic to suspend the model's availability to foreign users.

The banks will explore ways to use the tool to detect vulnerabilities and apply patches to any weaknesses identified.

Concerned over cyberattacks powered by advanced AI, Japan's Financial Services Agency in May called on financial groups to bolster their defenses.

The FSA also urged the sector to consider the option of voluntarily suspending critical services to prevent cyberattack damage from spreading.

Financials ISAC Japan, a mutual aid organization specializing in cyberattacks targeting financial institutions, is providing proposals to counter hacks in response to requests from the FSA and the Bank of Japan. The proposals serve as de facto guidelines for banks.
