Fox News’s Brit Hume on Wednesday said that Republicans lack momentum only a few weeks out from the midterms, with the GOP dealing with multiple political challenges as Election Day nears.
“I would say that the Republicans don't have much going for them this cycle. The polls all suggest that, the mood of the country suggests that,” Hume told Fox News’s Bret Baier on “Special Report.”
“They do have more money than the Democrats do, which could be spent wisely, one would imagine, to help them, but this 69 percent number that you show there on cost of living, I don't think much is going to change on cost of living over the next month,” he added, referencing poll results from Fox News that had just been shown about voters’ reasoning behind their vote in the key Michigan Senate race this year.
Hume continued, saying that cost of living circumstances “could change a little” and that “things have turned around a bit in the in the Strait of Hormuz,” referencing the key waterway for the oil industry that has been closed amid the war in Iran.
“Republicans have to worry that opinions have solidified and not in their favor, and that number suggests that that may be the case,” Hume said.
Republicans are staring down a challenging electoral environment these midterms, with President Trump’s slipping approval rating, the war in Iran stretching past the seven-month mark, polls showing they are behind in multiple races and concerns about the economy.
The conflict in Iran has driven up energy costs in the U.S., with the price of a regular gallon of gas sitting at about $4.41 on Thursday afternoon, up from about $3.16 last year at the same time, according to AAA.
