TOKYO -- Japanese companies are offering college students jobs before they even graduate, luring them with perks to make sure they do not look for work elsewhere.

大阪燃气在上一财年开始为潜在入职者提供海外留学和取得资格证书所需的费用。该公司会花费数十万日元(10万日元约合635美元),资助为期一个月的海外学习。

Osaka Gas last fiscal year began providing potential hires financial support for study abroad and obtaining qualifications. The company spends hundreds of thousands of yen (100,000 yen equals $635) to cover monthlong study abroad stints.

在2025财年的27份海外留学申请中,有14份获批,目的地包括新加坡、马来西亚、英国和美国。

Fourteen out of 27 study abroad applications were accepted into the program in fiscal 2025, with Singapore, Malaysia, the U.K. and the U.S among the destinations.

"Being able to utilize the language skills and knowledge I acquired during my studies abroad is a great source of motivation for my work," said a person who now works in Osaka Gas' overseas division.

Osaka Gas said it started the program because it wanted to "provide opportunities that would lead to richer life experiences," according to a representative.

Oji Holdings, a paper products manufacturer, provides scholarships to students. Students who would be hired for plant engineering positions are eligible, with grants ranging from 50,000 yen to 100,000 yen a month.

Oji said it looks to reduce the financial burden of prospective employees and have them concentrate on research and their specialized field of study.

This will "cultivate talent that can immediately contribute after joining the company," said an Oji representative. The company also raised starting salaries to be competitive.

This trend toward supporting prospective workers is being driven by how students are being scouted earlier in college. For students graduating next year, 46.6% have received job offers as of February, according to a survey by Career-tasu, an employment information provider.

Meanwhile, students continue to enjoy a tight labor market. Among university and graduate students in the 2027 graduating class who have received informal job offers, 37.1% received offers from two or more companies, according to a survey by the recruitment company Mynavi.
