In a deep dive, The Hill's Julia Shapero and Mallory Wilson examine how Trump's "self-policing" AI accord is landing in Washington as concerns mount over the tech's safety. © Alex Brandon, Associated Press While Trump says industry officials can self-police, critics argue AI needs more oversight to keep development from getting out of hand — even as some described the accord as a step in the right direction.

One expert told us the administration's concerns may be "sincere," but the pledge is not a "solution" to preventing the potential risks of AI development.

Several of the biggest players in the industry signed the one-page document Tuesday, which included four “layers of controls and audits.”

It declares that AI companies should implement “robust” internal controls over models, empower an internal crew to crosscheck controls and mediate any issues, partner with external auditors to evaluate their controls and designate an independent committee of the board of directors to oversee reports from the operating teams.

Some lawmakers, including members of his own party, expressed skepticism over the accord.

Sen. Josh Halwey (R-Mo.) called it a "good step" but stopped short of saying lawmakers can take AI executives at their world. to The Hill's Insider toon where Washington figures landed on the "morally binding" agreement.
