By Matthew Brockett Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the US war with Iran has been an economic disaster, blaming the conflict for higher inflation and borrowing costs worldwide and warning it’s also damping global growth.

“Whatever the reasons were for going in, from an economic point of view the war in the Middle East has been a disaster,” Chalmers told the Insiders program on ABC News on Sunday. “It’s been disastrous from a cost-of-living point of view, for Australians and indeed for people right around the world. The war in the Middle East is putting very substantial upward pressure on inflation. That’s why we’re seeing interest rates go up around the world.”

Asked if Donald Trump should end the war now, Chalmers said he didn’t want to give the US president advice, but an end to the war “can’t come soon enough.”“The longer this thing drags out, the bigger the impact on the global economy and on the Australian economy,” he said.

Chalmers was facing questions about the role government spending has played in fueling above-target inflation after the central bank raised interest rates to a 15-year high to curb price growth, citing both elevated energy prices due to the Middle East conflict and domestic capacity pressures. He said government spending growth has slowed and “budget settings are not the primary driver of prices in our economy.”

The government is working on a savings package to be announced in the mid-year budget update, he said, and cautioned that rising global bond yields will also drive up the cost of servicing public debt by “some billions of dollars.”

“There is very, very substantial and intensifying pressure, not just on our budget but on budgets right around the world,” Chalmers said. “Now we will have a savings package in the mid-year budget update. How that all nets out with all of the intensifying pressures, including from this increase in bond yields and borrowing costs, remains to be seen.”Chalmers said the US-Iran war was also impacting the global expansion.

“We’re not anticipating a recession here” but “certainly it is weighing on global growth, and we’re not immune from that,” he said.

Separately, Chalmers announced he will travel to Japan later Sunday to meet with Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama as well as business leaders and investors.

“While we share many opportunities, we also face many similar challenges as a result of global uncertainty, whether it’s higher energy prices driving up inflation or higher bond yields that are putting pressure on our budgets,” he said in a statement. “This is all about boosting investment, bolstering fuel security and resilience, and bringing Australia and Japan closer together in uncertain times.”
