The chair of Amnesty International UK has quit the Green party after it adopted a motion declaring that “Zionism is racism” at its conference over the weekend.

Sandy Ruthven, who was the Green party’s mayoral candidate in Bristol in 2021 and came second to Marvin Rees, said on Sunday that the motion marked “the end of the line” for him.

Writing on LinkedIn, he said: “My heart has always been with the Green Party of England and Wales and I have been a member for longer than I can remember. “But this motion at conference marks the end of the line for me. I have resigned my membership.

“In seeking to court the hard-left vote, we have failed to confront prejudice when it appears on our own side.

I sincerely hope the party finds a way back.”The Green party’s adoption of the motion prompted a joint statement from Bristol Central MP and former Green party co-leader Carla Denyer, plus the party’s five MPs, its leader, and co-deputy leaders.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski, who is Jewish, did not vote on the motion. Israel’s Foreign Ministry blasted it as a “clear antisemitic text” and said it went beyond “the boundaries of legitimate political debate.”Israel has also barred Polanski from entering the country.
