US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday temporarily allowing off-road dyed diesel to be used on highways and directing the federal government to defer the applicable federal excise tax through the end of the year.

“I’m going to sign a historic executive order to officially waive the off-road requirement and allow anyone to purchase tax-free red-dyed diesel for any reason,” Trump said during a rally in Nebraska beforeg the order live on stage.

The White House said the measure is intended to reduce diesel costs for consumers, farmers, truckers and other workers amid what the administration described as ongoing global conditions affecting diesel supplies.

Under the order, the treasury secretary, in consultation with the secretary of defense, is directed to defer payment of the federal excise tax applicable to on-road use of dyed diesel through the end of 2026. The deferred tax would not accrue interest or penalties during the period, while the administration is also directed to explore ways to eliminate the obligation to pay the deferred taxes.

Dyed diesel, commonly known as red-dye diesel, is generally intended for off-road uses such as farming, construction and heating. Because it is exempt from certain fuel taxes, the fuel is dyed red so authorities can distinguish it from diesel intended for highway use.
