Tennessee tried and failed to execute her by lethal injection last week. She remains hospitalized. Christa Pike, who survived a botched execution attempt last week in Tennessee, is now conscious and speaking, her attorneys said Tuesday afternoon. Tennessee officials attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection on Wednesday.
Pike, 50, had been sentenced to death decades earlier for her role in killing Colleen Slemmer in 1995.
Pike’s attorneys said that the day after the attempted execution, she was on a ventilator and unconscious, raising questions about her medical condition going forward. They also reported in a court filing that she had arrived at a Nashville-area hospital with both arms “swollen, burned, and blistered.”In a court filing last week, Pike’s attorneys sought an order to preserve materials from the attempted execution.
After the lethal injection failed, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) announced a halt to executions in the state and ordered a review into what happened. The incident sparked criticism in Tennessee and across the country and revived questions about methods of execution nationwide.
Pike’s attorneys said Tuesday she was still receiving “critical medical care.”“Her recovery is medically unprecedented,” they said in the statement. “Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”In an email Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Correction declined to elaborate on Pike’s condition. This is a developing story and will be updated.
