Syria on Wednesday denied claims that it was joining the war in Yemen, while reaffirming its support for Saudi Arabia amid escalating tensions with the Houthis, according to Syria’s state-run Alikhbariah TV.
“Syria’s position is clear. We stand firmly alongside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in confronting threats targeting its security and stability,” the Syrian Information Ministry’s Foreign Media Directorate said.
“At the same time, Syria’s policy in the region is based on stability, peace and cooperation, not on opening new fronts,” it added.
The directorate said Damascus’ “absolute priority” was Syria itself, including rebuilding the country, strengthening state institutions, working with partners on reconstruction efforts and improving living conditions for Syrians.
“Any military cooperation with partner countries will take place only through official channels and existing bilateral frameworks,” it said.
The statement came after media reports said Saudi Arabia and Syria were discussing possible Syrian military cooperation amid the escalating war in Yemen, including the potential deployment of Syrian troops to assist Saudi-backed Yemeni forces against the Houthis.
The remarks come amid intensified fighting in Yemen and Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, while the Saudi-led coalition has stepped up military operations against Houthi positions.
Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government against the Houthis since March 2015.
