Yemen’s internationally recognized government adopted a package of measures Thursday to implement a general mobilization and increase the readiness of state institutions amid escalating fighting with the Houthi group, the pro-government Saba news agency reported.
The measures were approved at a Cabinet meeting in Aden chaired by Prime Minister Shaya Mohsin Zindani.
The Cabinet said the declaration of general mobilization marked a “new phase” requiring state institutions to mobilize national resources and increase institutional, military, security, economic and humanitarian preparedness.
It instructed ministries, state institutions and local authorities to coordinate efforts and mobilize human and material resources.
Zindani said the government must strengthen state institutions and protect civilians as government forces and allied groups fight the Houthis.
He also warned that developments along the western coast and toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait posed a threat to international navigation, trade and supply routes.
The Cabinet also welcomed Saudi Arabia’s continued economic support, including a recent $60 million payment to Yemen’s central bank, which it said represented the third tranche of Riyadh’s budget support for the Yemeni government.
The developments come amid a military escalation between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis that began in early July, the most intense since the relative calm that followed a UN-brokered truce in April 2022.
Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized the national capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014, prompting a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
