Pope Leo XIV told artists at the Vatican on Friday that there is an ontological difference between art and what a machine generates from millions of images made by others. European law has required synthetic content to carry machine-readable marks since 2 August, but artistic and satirical work gets the lightest disclosure obligations of all.

He spoke on Friday in the Consistory Hall, to artists and curators at a meeting run by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education, which published the address. A condensed version went out on the papal account. Algorithms, he said, lack the spark of the human.

A machine-readable flag records how something was made. It does not carry the difference the Pope is describing, which is a claim about what the thing is.
