ANKARA -- Turkey's largest state-linked defense company, Aselsan, seeks partnerships with Japanese companies on underwater drones and air defense systems as it expands into Asian markets amid a worsening security environment in the region.

"What we offer is faster delivery, cost-effectiveness, high performance, and systems proven in different contexts," Ahmet Akyol, president and CEO of Aselsan, said in an interview with Nikkei and other media. Aselsan aims to leverage real-world operational data from its air defense systems to tap Asian markets.

Aselsan has been growing rapidly against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022. Its defense-related revenue increased 26% from a year earlier to $4.46 billion in 2025. Its strengths lie in radar, electronic warfare, and air defense systems, and it plays a core role in Turkey's multilayered integrated air defense system, Steel Dome.

Japan and Turkey have sought closer defense ties in recent years. At a summit on Sept. 22, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi proposed cooperation in defense equipment. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also underscored the importance of cooperation between their defense industries.

"Politically, there is alignment between Turkey and Japan. From our side, together with Japanese companies and the Japanese government, we have to find a way to build areas of cooperation," Akyol said. He cited promising areas including cost-effective air defense systems to counter suicide drones as well as systems to defend ships from attacks by underwater drones.

Aselsan's Steel Dome, a multi-layered integrated air and missile defense system, and Korkut, a very short range air defense system, are displayed at SAHA 2026 International Defence and Aerospace Exhibition in Istanbul on May 5.

Akyol said that discussions with the Japanese government are already underway. "This is not the time to wait; it is the time to do something as soon as possible. The defense industry revolution is moving very fast," he said, urging Japan to accelerate its consideration of adopting defense equipment.

On Aselsan's stance toward China, Akyol said, "Our business and company policy is fully compliant with NATO," suggesting the company prioritizes business with Western countries. Turkey is a NATO member, which frames China as a challenge to security and the rules-based international order.

Akyol said, "Three years ago, exports accounted for 10% of Aselsan's total revenue. Now the share is 25%. Our target is 50% by 2030." Aselsan was established in 1975 to develop domestically produced defense equipment, drawing lessons from the arms embargo Turkey faced after its conflict with Greece over Cyprus.
