Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen has joined calls for “practical action” as foreign emissaries gather for Australian-organised talks on the “frontline of the climate crisis”. Representatives from more than 50 countries are attending the Pre-COP conference kicking off in Fiji on Monday. Anthony Albanese will also meet with a handful of world leaders in Tuvalu -- a small, low-lying atoll where rising sea levels pose an existential threat.

COP is the UN’s flagship climate conference and has shaped global efforts to combat climate change. With Australia’s smaller Pacific neighbours viewing climate change as their biggest national security risk, holding a forerunner event was a condition of Canberra withdrawing its bid for the main event.

Mr Bowen’s Tuvaluan counterpart Maina Vakafua Talia said Pre-COP “will bring global decision-makers to the frontlines of climate change” and “show both the impacts we face and the practical work underway to protect our communities”.

Turkey’s climate change minister Murat Kurum said the Pacific event would get the world “ready to deliver results” at COP31.
