The federal justice minister, who authored the draft law, wants "perpetrators to no longer feel safe, but to expect to be identified and effectively prosecuted." The German government has approved a draft law on digital violence Wednesday in a bid to tighten the rules on rape videos and pornographic deepfakes.

The possession and production of videos depicting rape are currently not prohibited in Germany if intended for private use, while there is no specific law which regulates using sexual deepfakes of a particular person, according to press agency dpa. The proposed bill, which will be discussed in the Bundestag, aims to change this as “the law is lagging behind digital reality,” the government said in a statement.

“Germany currently has no criminal provision that makes the creation and distribution of [sexual] deepfakes punishable. I want us to amend the Criminal Code accordingly,” said Germany’s Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig, the author of the draft law.
