Half of Democratic voters say they expect their party to retake the House and Senate in the November midterm elections, mostly in response to President Trump’s policies and actions, according to a poll released Wednesday.
A Politico poll found that 50 percent of Democrats believe the Democratic Party will take over the House and Senate due to Trump’s actions compared to the 35 percent who say the party will claim Congress because candidates ran strong campaigns.
Forty-six percent say they will vote to oppose Trump, and 37 percent say they’ll vote to support a candidate in their area.
Conversely, 41 percent of MAGA-aligned voters say Republicans will only lose both chambers if they run weak campaigns, and 22 percent say it will be because of Trump’s actions.
The poll shows that 43 percent of Democratic midterm voters believe the blame would be on Democratic candidates for running weak campaigns should Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress. Another 22 percent say it would happen based on Trump’s actions.
MAGA-aligned voters say they would credit Trump’s actions and strong Republican campaigns if the GOP keeps control of Congress, 37-36. Seventeen percent told pollsters that GOP control of Congress will be the result of weak Democratic campaigns.
Slightly more non-MAGA Trump voters say the GOP’s loss of Congress would be because of Trump’s actions and weak Republican campaigns, 31-29, with nearly a quarter saying it will be because of strong Democratic campaigns.
Forty percent say the GOP keeping its majority in both chambers would likely be based on strong Republican campaigns, with 22 percent saying it would be because of Trump’s actions and 25 percent saying it’s because Democrats campaigned poorly.
“Trump is getting his wish: The president is, in effect, on the ballot and remains the main character of this election cycle,” Politico wrote about its poll findings. “That’s causing major headwinds for GOP candidates, who already face an incumbent disadvantage from voters who historically seek change from the party in power.”“Trump’s approval rating is historically low, and polls suggest voters blame him for the affordability crisis at the center of both parties’ messaging,” the outlet added.
Trump and other Republican lawmakers predict that Democrats will seek to impeach the president if they gain control of Congress — a possibility that some Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), have not ruled out.
“It’s guaranteed, probably on the first day — first or second day,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Tuesday in an interview with Scott Jennings, a pro-Trump pundit. “Remember, they’ve already filed articles of impeachment in this Congress. And they’re raring to go.”The Politico survey was conducted Oct. 3-5 and included 2,001 respondents. The margin of error is 2.2 percentage points.
