HO CHI MINH CITY -- Vingroup and France's Alstom signed a deal covering 200 trainsets for the portion of the Hanoi metro system that Vietnam's biggest conglomerate is building.

Alstom will deliver 83 driverless trainsets and help Vingroup to produce the 117 remaining sets, they said on Tuesday. The two companies did not disclose the value of the agreement.

The deal comes as Hanoi pushes ahead with plans to build an 18-line urban rail network spanning 979 kilometers by 2045. The project would rank among Southeast Asia's largest metro development programs if completed as planned. Earlier this year, Vingroup's Vinhomes and VinSpeed were selected to develop five metro lines in the capital, including links to the airport.

"Alstom will provide technology, engineering expertise, tooling support and key components, enabling Vingroup to develop local capabilities to manufacture" trainsets, while the first 83 sets will be made in northern France, Vingroup said.

With ports, bridges, a stadium, road projects and electric vehicle charging for its VinFast unit, the corporation is becoming more involved in infrastructure work, on top of its township construction.

Multiple subway lines are under way in Hanoi, which got its first in 2021, and Ho Chi Minh City, which joined the club in 2024.
