Even relatives who aren't the parents of children born on U.S. soil could see their U.S. visas revoked. The Trump administration has ordered U.S. diplomats to examine certain visa and travel files from 2020 onward to find instances of people traveling to the United States to give birth, according to a State Department cable obtained by POLITICO.

Foreigners determined to have engaged in the practice may see existing U.S. visas revoked or have difficulty obtaining a new visa to travel to the United States, according to the cable and other recent statements from the State Department.

The cable — sent by Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s office to diplomatic posts worldwide Tuesday — provides guidance on how to handle “suspected birth tourism cases.”“Birth tourism” is a phrase sometimes used to describe the practice of foreigners traveling to the U.S. — ostensibly as tourists — to give birth so that their newborns can obtain U.S. citizenship. Traveling primarily for childbirth is not a valid reason to be granted a tourist visa under standard interpretations of U.S. immigration law.
