Pakistan’s prime minister on Friday reiterated the nation’s commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia, under the new trilateral Mecca Alliance – formed along with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye – condemning attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group on the kingdom.

Shehbaz Sharif made the statement after the Houthis targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport, which resulted in the loss of lives and injuries to civilians. Lauding the “vigilance and professionalism” of the Saudi armed forces and its coalition forces in intercepting multiple ballistic missiles and “their tireless efforts to protect innocent lives and safeguard the Kingdom,” Sharif said: “Pakistan stands in unwavering solidarity with the leadership and people of our brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

In line with the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, and recent decisions taken by its Strategic Political and Defense Committee, he wrote on US social media company X, “our commitment to the Kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security is resolute. We also fully support Saudi Arabia’s legitimate right to defend its people and protect its cities and vital infrastructure.”The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said Thursday that it intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis toward Riyadh and Khamis Mushait.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed had that his group targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile, saying the strike disrupted air traffic. “The Houthi militia must immediately cease these attacks,” said Pakistani prime minister. “We will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Saudi Arabia in the face of these threats.”The pact forming the new Mecca Alliance was signed on Aug. 7 by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, followed by a series of steps by its three member states to institutionalize the agreement.
