The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research says youth unemployment in the country has reached what it calls a crisis level. The independent research body warned that the spread of artificial intelligence and other technological change is adding further uncertainty to an already difficult labour market. It said a genuine recovery could prove harder to achieve than in past downturns.
New Zealand's youth unemployment rate has climbed to what the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) describes as a crisis level, the independent think tank said this week. The warning comes as the broader labour market continues to struggle to absorb workers displaced by a slowing economy.
NZIER said the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and related technologies is compounding the problem, potentially eliminating entry-level roles that young workers have traditionally relied on to gain experience. The institute argued this adds a further layer of uncertainty on top of existing cyclical weakness.
Economists at the institute cautioned that a full recovery in youth employment could take considerably longer than in past downturns, given these structural pressures. They called for policymakers to pay closer attention to training and transition support for younger jobseekers.
